How to disconnect or reconnect QuickBooks

Disconnect QuickBooks from Settings > QuickBooks sync, or reconnect after a dropped connection. Your sync settings and existing records are kept.

Written by Dave Pucci

To disconnect QuickBooks, go to Settings > QuickBooks sync, select Disconnect from QuickBooks, and select Disconnect. Your records stay in both Handoff and QuickBooks, and Handoff keeps your sync settings.

Available on the Flex, Pro, Scale, and Business plans. You need permission to edit Company settings. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.

Disconnect QuickBooks

  1. Go to Settings > QuickBooks sync.

  2. Select Disconnect from QuickBooks.

  3. Select Disconnect to confirm.

Handoff briefly shows Disconnected, and the connection status changes to match.

After you disconnect:

  • New syncs stop. Records you synced before are no longer updated.

  • Existing records stay in Handoff and in QuickBooks. Handoff deletes nothing.

  • Your sync settings are saved and come back when you reconnect.

Reconnect after you disconnect

  1. Go to Settings > QuickBooks sync.

  2. Select Connect to QuickBooks.

  3. Sign in to Intuit and choose the same QuickBooks company you connected before.

  4. Select Finish setup when you return to Handoff.

Handoff keeps the links between your records and their QuickBooks copies, so syncing resumes for them.

Reconnect a dropped connection

When the connection drops, the connection status shows Sync failed and the projects list shows a QuickBooks sync is off banner. Admins also get an Issue with your QuickBooks account connection notification. A connection can drop if it expires, your permissions change, or your QuickBooks subscription has a problem.

  1. Select View on the banner, or go to Settings > QuickBooks sync.

  2. In the Reconnect your account window, select Reconnect to QuickBooks.

  3. Sign in to Intuit and choose the same QuickBooks company.

  4. If Finish setup appears when you return, select it.

Your data stays safe, and reconnecting restores syncing.

Connect a different QuickBooks company

Connecting a different company clears the links between your records and QuickBooks. Previously synced records show the error This record was linked to a different QuickBooks company. Handoff does not send them to the new company automatically.

Before you retry a record, check that it belongs in the new company and that a copy doesn't already exist there. Retrying creates a new copy.

If you see Account already linked when you connect, that QuickBooks company is linked to another Handoff account, and a company can link to only one at a time. Select Connect a different account to choose another company, or select Contact support if the company should be linked to your Handoff account instead.
