To run an AI takeoff, open the chat on an estimate, select + > Takeoff mode, add your plans, and select Start takeoff. Handoff builds an estimate from your plans, usually within 1 to 2 hours.
Available on the Pro and Scale plans. Scale has no takeoff limit, and Pro includes 1 takeoff credit. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.
Start a takeoff
Open the chat for your estimate or the Handy chat.
Select + in the message box, then select Takeoff mode.
If an intro appears, select Start takeoff. On Pro, it shows Claim my free credit instead.
Select Upload files to add plans from your device, or Select from project to use files already in the project.
Optional: enter Takeoff instructions for details the plans do not show.
Check the Project location. Handoff uses it for local pricing and labor.
Select Start takeoff.
Handoff starts the takeoff and notifies you when it finishes. You can keep working in the meantime.
File types and limits
File types: PDF, PNG, JPG, and TIFF.
Size: up to 300 pages in total and 200 MB per file.
Not supported: CAD, Revit, BIM, and 3D model files.
The uploader shows your page count and tells you how many pages to remove if you go over.
Instructions that help
Takeoff instructions are optional. Use them for choices the plans leave open. Try "Use vinyl siding" or "Exclude windows".
When the estimate already has items
If the estimate on screen already has line items, Takeoff mode creates a new estimate in the same project and leaves your current one unchanged. If the estimate is empty, the takeoff fills it. You can run one takeoff at a time on an estimate.
The takeoff does not start
Out of credits: Handoff shows "You're out of AI takeoff credits." Scale has no limit, so this applies to Pro after its 1 credit.
Plans not supported: Handoff accepts residential projects up to 7,000 sq ft with at least one construction drawing.
Files still uploading: wait until every file finishes uploading, then start again.
