AI takeoff reads your residential plans, measures and counts the quantities, and builds an editable estimate in 1 to 2 hours. You also get takeoff drawings and a summary report. It works for residential projects up to 7,000 sq ft.
Available on the Pro and Scale plans. Scale has no takeoff limit, and Pro includes 1 takeoff credit to try it. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.
What you get from a takeoff
Handoff produces three things and saves them to your project:
Estimate: an editable estimate with line items broken down by scope.
Takeoff drawings: color-coded plans with a legend for each scope.
Summary report: the scope, assumptions, and missing information.
Editing the estimate afterward does not change the takeoff drawings. To reflect revised plans, run a new takeoff.
When to use AI takeoff
Use AI takeoff when you have a residential plan set and want measured quantities instead of reading sizes off the page. It fits single-family homes, custom builds, remodels with plans, and multifamily projects within the size limit.
Plans can be PDF, PNG, JPG, or TIFF, up to 300 pages.
Handoff checks each set before it starts. It stops sets that are not residential, that exceed 7,000 sq ft, or that have no construction drawings. For commercial or very large jobs, use file analysis instead.
AI takeoff or file analysis
File analysis is the normal way Handy (Handoff's AI assistant) reads files in chat. File analysis is available on all plans. You attach a file, and Handy reads what is on the page, such as text, dimensions, and callouts, and uses it in your estimate.
File analysis reads PDFs, images, Word and Excel files, CSVs, and more. It does not scale a drawing, so it cannot measure quantities from plans on its own. For long PDFs, Handy searches the first 100 pages.
AI takeoff is a separate process that runs in the background. It scales your plans, measures and counts quantities, and returns takeoff drawings, a summary report, and an editable estimate.
File analysis: quotes, specs, vendor pricing, scopes of work, photos, and small or simple plans where you want a quick answer.
AI takeoff: residential plan sets where you want measured quantities and takeoff drawings.
If you ask Handy in chat to run a takeoff, Handy can offer you the choice between the two before it starts.
Credits
Scale has no limit on takeoffs. Pro includes 1 takeoff credit to try AI takeoff, and Pro cannot add more. If a takeoff fails, the credit is returned.
The Flex and Business plans do not include AI takeoff. During a trial, takeoff is not available because trials have no takeoff credits.
How long it takes
Most takeoffs finish within 2 hours. Handoff notifies you when yours is ready, and you can keep working in the meantime.
