How to measure a room with Room Scan (Beta)

Scan rooms with a LiDAR iPhone or iPad to capture dimensions and a 3D model, then start an estimate from the floor plan.

Written by Handoff Support

To measure a room, open a project in the iOS app, select the + button in the bottom right, choose Room scan, and scan each room. Handoff turns the scan into a dimensioned floor plan and a 3D model that you can use to start an estimate. Room Scan is labeled Beta.

Available on the Pro and Scale plans. You need iOS 17 or later and permission to edit project files. Works in the mobile app only. You need an iPhone or iPad with a LiDAR scanner.

Before you start

  • Device: an iPhone or iPad with a LiDAR scanner and iOS 17 or later. Room Scan does not work on Android or the web.

  • Access: the Room scan option appears only when Room Scan is turned on for your account during the Beta.

  • Plan: Pro or Scale. On other plans, new scans are blocked.

Scan a room

  1. In the iOS app, open the project.

  2. On the project's Overview tab, select the + button in the bottom right of the screen.

  3. Select Room scan.

  4. Walk the room and point the camera at every wall, door, and window, following the on-screen tips.

  5. Scan the next room when you are ready. A scan holds up to 30 rooms.

  6. Select Finish floor plan when every room is captured.

The app shows how many rooms you have captured as you go.

Other ways to start a scan

You can also start Room Scan from the + menu in a chat with Handy (Handoff's AI assistant) by selecting Room scan. In a project, you can select Room scan from the upload menu on the Files tab. On iPad, the chat start screen does not show a Room scan row, but the other options still work.

What you get

Handoff saves a floor plan with the room measurements, and you can select Preview 3D model. To scan another level later, open the saved plan and select Add floor.

To start an estimate, open the saved plan and select Estimate from its create menu. Handy can read your scan measurements and apply them to a draft estimate.

Room Scan is a field aid. Confirm critical dimensions on site before you price the job.
