How Handy learns your preferences

Handy keeps notes on how you work from your chats and uses them as hints on later estimates. See what it saves, who sees it, and what outranks it.

Written by Handoff Support

Handy (Handoff's AI assistant) keeps a private memory for each user. After your chats, it saves lasting facts about how you work, such as your preferred materials, and uses them as hints on later estimates. Memory is advisory, and your current chat, presets, and catalogs all outrank it.

Available on all plans. Flex includes 50 AI credits a month, and Pro and Scale are unlimited. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.

What Handy remembers

After each conversation, Handy reviews it and keeps only durable, high-confidence facts. These include preferences, constraints, goals, and corrections you make. Examples are:

  • How you build estimates and organize sections.

  • Labor and productivity habits.

  • Material pricing, supplier, and brand choices.

  • How you use your catalogs.

Greetings, small talk, and one-off details are ignored.

Who memory belongs to

Memory is kept for each user, so teammates don't see or share it. When you work inside a project, Handy checks the memories from that project first, then your general ones.

Handoff doesn't have a screen to view, edit, or delete these memories. To change a preference, state the new one in chat or set a rule in your presets.

What outranks memory

Handy follows this order when sources disagree:

  • Your current chat: what you type now.

  • Presets and catalogs: your saved rates, markups, and instructions.

  • Memory: hints from past chats, which can be incomplete or wrong.

Handy only claims to remember what it can find. If you ask "what do you remember about how I price tile?", it checks your past work to answer.

Remembering is not the same as saving

Memory fills gaps. It doesn't change your settings. Handy saves a rate, rule, or default as a preset only when you state it explicitly in chat, for example "always use 20% markup on subs".

When it notices a pattern you haven't stated, it suggests saving it, and saves only after you confirm. New instructions start disabled until Handoff checks them. See How to teach Handoff your estimating preferences (AI instructions).

Memory and research

Memory is separate from research. Memory shapes how Handy answers in your chat. Research reads your earlier estimates before a new one. See How Handy researches your past work.
