AI Takeoffs helps you turn a residential plan set into a detailed estimate, annotated takeoff PDF, and summary report. Instead of spending hours clicking through plans or waiting days for an outsourced takeoff, you can upload your plans and let Handoff process the takeoff in the background.
What AI Takeoffs Does
AI Takeoffs reviews your residential construction plans and creates:
A detailed estimate with line items broken down by scope.
An annotated takeoff PDF with color-coded markups showing what was counted.
A summary report with assumptions, missing information, and possible plan conflicts.
These files are saved directly to your project in Handoff.
Best Fit Projects
AI Takeoffs works best for residential construction projects, including:
Single-family homes.
Custom home builds.
Residential remodels with plan sets.
Light multifamily projects, such as small townhomes or quadplexes.
AI Takeoffs is not recommended for commercial, industrial, government, heavy civil, or large multifamily projects.
How To Start An AI Takeoff
Open Handoff and go to your Project.
Create a New Estimate.
Click Takeoff Mode in the bottom-left corner.
Upload your plan set as a PDF. You can upload multiple PDF files.
Add an optional prompt if there are details that are not obvious from the plans.
Click Start Takeoff.
After you submit the plans, Handoff runs a quick eligibility check. If the plans are supported, the takeoff will process in the background.
When To Add A Prompt
A prompt is optional, but it can help Handoff understand project details that may not be clear in the plans.
For example, you can add notes like:
“Use vinyl siding.”
“Use 2x6 exterior walls.”
“Exclude windows.”
“Separate interior and exterior work.”
What Happens Next
Once the takeoff starts, you can keep working in Handoff while it runs. Most takeoffs are completed in about 1–2 hours.
When the takeoff is complete, you’ll receive:
An editable estimate.
A downloadable annotated takeoff PDF.
A summary report with assumptions, missing information, and potential conflicts.
Important Notes
AI Takeoffs currently supports PDF plan sets.
AutoCAD, Revit, BIM, and 3D model files are not supported.
File and page limits are shown in the uploader.
If plans are revised, upload the revised plans as a new takeoff.
Annotated takeoff colors and groupings cannot be edited after processing.
You can still edit the estimate and summary report after the takeoff is complete.
