What Is AI Takeoff and How Does It Work in Handoff?

An orientation to AI takeoff in Handoff — what it is, the problem it solves, and how it turns your plans into a priced estimate.

Written by Handoff Support

Overview

AI Takeoff automates one of the most time-consuming parts of estimating: counting materials and measuring quantities from construction plans. Instead of manually reviewing drawings and transferring counts into an estimate, Handoff performs this process for you.

By uploading your plans as a PDF, Handoff generates Takeoff Drawings and creates a draft estimate with quantities that flow directly into editable line items, helping you produce estimates much faster.

AI Takeoff is exclusively a Scale Plan feature, please reach out to us at [email protected] if you are wanting to explore these features more in depth.

How AI Takeoff Works

  1. Upload your plans.

    • Upload your residential construction plans as a PDF.

  2. Let Handoff analyze the drawings.

    • Handoff uses computer vision to scale the plans, measure dimensions, and identify material quantities directly from the drawings.

  3. Generate Takeoff Drawings.

    • As the analysis runs, Handoff creates Takeoff Drawings that show the measurements and quantities extracted from the plans.

  4. Build a draft estimate.

    • The measured quantities automatically populate your estimate as line items, each including:

      • Quantity

      • Unit

      • Rate

  5. Review and edit the estimate.

    • Instead of manually counting, transcribing, and pricing materials, you can focus on reviewing and refining the estimate before sending it to your customer.

Additional Notes

  • A traditional takeoff involves counting every required material, such as:

    • Studs

    • Drywall sheets

    • Roofing materials

    • Doors

    • Windows

  • Manual takeoffs often require marking up printed plans with highlighters and scale rulers before transferring the information into an estimate.

  • AI Takeoff combines counting, measuring, and pricing into a single workflow by automatically feeding quantities into your estimate.

Troubleshooting

The estimate needs adjustments

Why it happens

  • Construction plans can vary in complexity, and every project may require estimator review.

How to fix it

  • Review the generated line items and make any necessary edits before finalizing your estimate.

Processing takes time

Why it happens

  • Handoff analyzes the uploaded plans and generates both Takeoff Drawings and a draft estimate.

How to fix it

  • Allow the process to complete, then review the generated estimate. For residential plans, Handoff can typically produce Takeoff Drawings in 30 minutes - 2 hours rather than the days often required for a manual takeoff.
