How to connect your AI assistant to Handoff (MCP)

Connect Claude or ChatGPT to your Handoff account so the assistant can work with your projects, estimates, and invoices.

Written by Handoff Support

To connect an AI assistant, go to Settings > Integrations & API keys and select Connect on the AI assistants (MCP) row. Then select Connect next to ChatGPT or Claude. You sign in with your own Handoff login, and the assistant can then work with your Handoff projects through a chat.

Available on the Scale plan. You need permission to edit organization settings to connect an assistant. Works on desktop.

Connect Claude or ChatGPT

  1. Go to Settings > Integrations & API keys.

  2. On the Integrations tab, select Connect on the AI assistants (MCP) row.

  3. In the Connect AI assistants dialog, select Connect on the Claude or ChatGPT card.

  4. In the assistant's directory page, install Handoff and follow the prompts to sign in to Handoff.

  5. Open a new chat in the assistant, with Handoff available.

In ChatGPT, you can also select Handoff in a chat or mention it with @Handoff. If your workspace blocks installs, ask your workspace admin to allow Handoff.

Connect another AI assistant

In the Connect AI assistants dialog, select Connect with other tools to open these instructions. Other assistants, such as Copilot, need a version that supports custom MCP servers and Handoff sign-in.

  1. Open the assistant's settings and look for Add MCP server or Add custom connector. The label varies by assistant.

  2. Paste this server address: https://api.handoff.ai/core/api/v2/mcp

  3. Follow the prompts to sign in to Handoff and approve access.

  4. Start a conversation and try "List my Handoff projects and summarize their current status."

If your tool cannot sign in, create a Handoff API key on the API keys tab and use that instead. Treat the key like a password, because anyone with it can act for your organization. See How the Handoff API works.

What your assistant can do in Handoff

  • Projects: create and delete projects, assign a client, and update the name, status, and client.

  • Estimates: build estimates with line items and sections, edit or delete items, read breakdowns, and create change orders.

  • Proposals: generate a proposal from an estimate, send it by email or SMS, and approve, decline, or cancel it.

  • Invoices: create and edit invoices from an estimate, send them, log manual payments, and mark them paid.

  • Contacts and templates: create and look up client contacts, and read your templates, terms, and rate catalogs.

How access and security work

Each person connects with their own Handoff login, and access stays within your organization. Destructive actions, such as deleting a project, need an explicit confirmation.

Disconnect an assistant

Open the Connect AI assistants dialog, and under Connected assistants, select Disconnect next to the assistant. The assistant may still list Handoff until it next tries to use it, so also remove it in the assistant's own settings.
