An estimate lists your work as items, grouped under groups and sections, with a cost and a client price for each. The totals bar at the bottom shows the total with markup, and See breakdown (Show breakdown on desktop) shows how Handoff got to it.
Available on all plans. You need permission to edit Estimates to change values. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.
How the estimate is organized
An estimate has up to three levels. A section is the top level, such as Kitchen. A group sits inside a section, such as Electrical or Framing.
An item is one line of work or material.
An estimate can also use only groups and items. Group and section rows show an item count in place of a quantity and add up everything inside them. To add or move rows, see How to edit items on an estimate.
Columns in the table
The estimate table shows these columns, in this order.
Item: the item title. Groups and sections use this column for their names.
Options & Add Ons: client choices on an item. It appears on the Scale plan when the estimate uses choices.
Description: plain text, up to 2000 characters.
Quantity: how many units.
Unit cost: your cost for one unit.
Cost code: appears only when cost codes are turned on for your company.
Cost type: Material, Labor, Labor + Material, or Other.
Builder cost: Quantity multiplied by Unit cost. This is your cost before markup.
Markup: the markup on the item.
Profit margin: the share of the client total you keep, before tax.
Tax applied: whether tax applies to the item.
Client total: Builder cost plus markup.
On desktop, select Edit columns in the toolbar above the table to show or hide columns. The button is not available in the mobile app, where you select an item to see and edit its details. Choose columns with the switches, then select Save.
Quantities, units, and cost types
Each item has a Quantity, a unit such as SF, LF, EA, or HRS, and a Unit cost. Handy (Handoff's AI assistant) usually prices labor in hours. For how Handy picks quantities, see How Handoff calculates quantities.
The Cost type tells you what the item covers.
Material: products and supplies.
Labor: work by you or your crew.
Labor + Material: one price that covers both.
Other: anything else, such as permits or fees.
Totals and the breakdown
In the mobile app, the totals bar shows Total with markup. Select See breakdown to open the breakdown, which shows your costs, your markups, and the tax. On desktop, the totals bar below the table shows Estimate total with Profit margin, Total cost, and Total markup. Select Show breakdown to open the breakdown. The order of the calculation is in How Handoff prices an estimate.
To change markup or tax, see How to edit your markup and How to set tax on an estimate.
What your client sees
Your client doesn't see the estimate. They see the proposal, which you open from the Proposal tab and send with Preview and Send on desktop, or Preview & send in the mobile app.
The proposal uses totals that include markup. Cost type, Builder cost, Markup, and Profit margin are for you only.
To undo a manual edit or a change made by Handy, see How to fix an estimate with Handy or by hand.
