Handoff separates material and labor on every estimate. Each line has a type of Material, Labor, Labor + Material or Other. You can set a different markup for each type in the estimate breakdown.
Available on all plans. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.
How lines get a type and how to change it
When Handy (Handoff's AI assistant) generates an estimate, it assigns a type to each line. Studs and sheathing come in as Material, installation time as Labor, and subs, permits, rentals and disposal usually as Other. On desktop, the estimate table shows the type in the Cost type column.
A line typed Labor + Material is split into its material and labor parts when Handoff calculates totals and tax.
To change the type of a line, follow these steps.
Open the estimate and select the line item.
In the item form, open the Category dropdown.
Choose Material, Labor, Labor + Material or Other.
The line moves into that type's totals and markup. On desktop, the Cost type column in the table also updates.
See totals and set a markup for each type
Open the estimate.
Select Show breakdown on desktop or See breakdown in the mobile app.
Read the Total cost section, which shows Material, Labor and Other costs.
Further down, the breakdown shows Material total, Labour total and Other total. On desktop, the breakdown opens as a panel titled Breakdown. In the mobile app, it opens full screen with the title Estimate Breakdown.
To set a different markup for each type, follow these steps.
Open the estimate. Select Show breakdown on desktop or See breakdown in the mobile app.
Under Total markup, select the Material, Labor or Other row.
Enter a percentage or a fixed dollar amount.
In the mobile app, select Save. On desktop, there is no Save button, and the change saves when you leave the field.
An edited row shows Custom. Select it, then select Reset markup to return to your default. A percentage must be between 0 and 999%.
Common setups include these.
Material markup 0% and labor markup 35% to 45%, when you buy materials at cost.
A concrete sub moved to Other at 10% while the rest of the estimate is at 30%.
Allowances set to Other at 0% markup, so they pass through at cost.
Set defaults or override one line
Markup changes on one estimate do not change your defaults. To set the starting values for new estimates, go to Settings > AI Settings > Presets > Estimates, and edit Markups.
Saved defaults are percentages only. See How to edit your markup.
In a line item's form, you can set Custom markup or Profit margin for that line only. Select Revert markup or Revert margin to return it to the estimate's markup for its type. Profit margin on a line is capped at 99%.
What your client sees
Your client sees prices with markup already included. Markups are not shown as separate lines on the proposal. What the proposal shows (section totals, line item prices or a full breakdown) is set in Presets > Proposals > Proposal format.
