How to create your first project and estimate

Create a project, add your client, then describe the job to Handy to build your first estimate. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.

Written by Dave Pucci

Create the project, name it, and add your client. Then create an estimate and describe the job to Handy (Handoff's AI assistant), which builds it for you.

Available on the Flex, Pro, Scale, and Business plans. Field Crew cannot create projects or estimates. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.

Create the project

  1. On desktop, select Projects > Create project. In the mobile app, select the Projects tab > New.

  2. Handoff opens a project called Untitled project. No form or dialog appears first.

The mobile app opens on Handy, and Projects is its own tab in the tab bar. To move tabs around, see How to change the tabs in the mobile app.

Name the project and add your client

  1. Select the Untitled project name at the top and type a name. It saves a moment after you stop typing.

  2. On the Overview tab, find the Client details card and select Add client.

  3. In the Assign client dialog, search for an existing client and select them.

  4. To add someone who isn't in Handoff yet, select New client and fill in their details.

The Client details card now shows your client's name, phone, and email. Estimates and invoices you send from this project use that client.

Add files (optional)

Select the Files tab, then select Upload to add plans, photos, or other documents to the project. In the mobile app, the Files tab also lets you take photos. You need permission to edit Files.

Create the estimate

  1. Open the project and select the Estimates tab.

  2. On desktop, select Create estimate. In the mobile app, select + > Create estimate.

You can also start from the Overview tab: select Create > Estimate on desktop, or + > Estimate in the mobile app. The same menu offers other starting points:

Describe the job to Handy

  1. In the Ask Handy box at the bottom of the chat, type what you are building. Include the scope, the rooms or areas, and the finish level.

  2. To talk instead of type, select Record voice. Handoff turns your recording into text in the box.

  3. To add a file, select Attach file.

  4. Select Send message.

Handy builds the estimate from your description and the line items appear in the estimate.

Set the price location and review

Pricing depends on where the job is, so the estimate uses the project address if there is one. To set or change the location, select Set price location in the Ask Handy box.

Read through the line items, then edit quantities or prices, or ask Handy to change them. See How to create an estimate with Handy and How location sets pricing in your estimates.
