How location sets pricing in your estimates

Handoff prices labor by the county of your estimate's price location. Set the location from your project address or the Set price location button.

Written by Handoff Support

Handoff prices labor from the county of your estimate's price location, so the location you set decides which local labor rate the AI uses. Handoff fills the location in from your project address when it can, and you can change it any time with the Set price location button.

Available on all plans. Local pricing works for United States locations only. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.

Where the price location comes from

When you chat with Handy (Handoff's AI assistant) on an estimate, it uses the first valid location from this list.

  1. The location already set on that chat.

  2. The location set on the estimate.

  3. The project's location. If the project has none, Handoff uses the project's client location.

  4. Your device's GPS location.

When you start an estimate from a project, Handoff uses the project's location. When you start one outside a project, it uses your device's location. Handoff also remembers the last location you used on that device.

On desktop, your browser asks for permission to use your device location. In the mobile app, your phone asks.

If Handoff has no location, you see a prompt with an Allow location access button. The prompt reads "Set your price location or allow access for automatic estimate pricing".

Set or change the price location for an estimate

  1. Open the estimate and go to the chat box where you describe the work.

  2. Select Set price location. In the mobile app, this button can show only a pin icon.

  3. Search for the city or address and select it. On desktop, the search opens in a menu under the button. In the mobile app, it opens in a Set price location window.

The estimate now uses that location for pricing. A GPS location is saved as a city and state, such as "Austin, TX, USA".

How the location changes your numbers

Handoff turns your location into a county and applies that county's labor index to the trade rate for each labor line. Material lines are matched to Home Depot or Lowe's prices when a retail supplier is turned on.

If Handoff can't find the county, it uses a standard labor index. If it has no location at all, it uses a default hourly labor rate.

Your own rates still win. A rate in a catalog, or a rate you type in chat such as "use $100/hr for labor", is used instead of the location rate.

Limits on location

  • Locations outside the United States aren't supported. If your device is outside the United States, Handoff shows "Sorry, only locations in the United States are supported."

  • Handoff doesn't use your business address from company settings as the default price location.

  • Taxes are set separately in your estimate presets, not by location.
