What your client sees when they pay an invoice

Your client opens the invoice link, reviews it, and selects Pay now to pay by card or bank transfer. See each screen, and what they see without online payments.

Your client opens the invoice link in a web browser, reviews the invoice, and selects Pay now to pay by card or bank transfer. They never need a password, a Handoff account, or the app.

Available on the Flex, Pro, Scale, and Business plans. Pay now appears only when online payments are active on your account. Works on desktop and in the mobile app.

What your client sees on the invoice page

The invoice page shows your logo and company name, the payment number, the status, and the due date. Below that, your client sees:

  • Message: the note you added, if any.

  • Line items, a Flat amount, or a percentage payment, followed by the totals.

  • Attachments you added to the invoice.

  • Reference: for an invoice made from a proposal, the payment history and the proposal.

The menu at the top of the page has Export as PDF. On a desktop browser it also has Print.

How your client pays

  1. Your client opens the invoice link and selects Pay now.

  2. On the Pay online screen, they choose Credit or Debit Card or ACH (Bank Transfer).

  3. They enter their details and select Pay.

The payment covers the full balance due. Your client can't pay part of an invoice online. To record a partial payment, see How to log a payment and track invoice status.

What your client sees after they pay

A Thank you screen confirms the payment. For a card, it says the payment "has been made successfully". For a bank transfer, it says the payment "has been initiated".

Your client selects Close to return to the invoice.

While a payment is processing, Pay now is hidden. Once it clears, the invoice shows Paid on followed by the date.

To send your client a receipt, see How to send a payment receipt.

When online payments are not active

Without online payments, your client sees the same invoice but no Pay now button. They pay by check or another way you arrange, and you log the payment yourself.

You can still send invoices. To turn on online payments, see How to set up online payments.
